When Mike Wells was first diagnosed with Stage I prostate cancer in 2022, he hoped careful monitoring would be enough. But three years later, everything changed.

A rising PSA level led to another biopsy, revealing that his cancer had progressed. Imaging also showed a small lesion on his pelvic bone, raising the possibility that the cancer had spread.

“For a while, there was a lot of uncertainty,” Mike recalls. “Even though the scan ultimately showed it hadn’t spread, those were some stressful days.”

His urologist referred him to New England Cancer Specialists, where Mike met with Dr. Thomas and Dr. Bristol to discuss his options.

“From my very first appointment, I felt like I was in the right place,” he says. “No one rushed me. They took the time to explain everything, answer every question, and make sure I understood exactly what was happening.”

Together, they developed a treatment plan that included five weeks of radiation therapy and six months of hormone therapy.

One decision, in particular, gave Mike peace of mind.

“Another physician had recommended two years of hormone therapy,” he says. “After talking with Dr. Thomas about my specific case, we decided six months was the right approach for me. That made me feel like they were treating me as an individual—not following a one-size-fits-all plan.”

Like many patients undergoing treatment, Mike experienced fatigue, digestive issues, and the side effects that often accompany radiation and hormone therapy. But what stands out most isn’t the discomfort—it was never having to face it alone.

“Every time I had a question or concern, someone was there to listen,” Mike says. “The doctors, nurses, radiation therapists, and staff genuinely cared about how I was doing. Even on difficult days, I was greeted with a smile and encouragement.”

For Mike, the support he received extended well beyond the clinical care.

“Cancer affects more than your body,” he says. “It affects your mind and your family, too. The team at NECS gave me confidence and hope when I needed it most.”

Looking back today, Mike is grateful not only for the expertise that guided his treatment, but for the compassion that carried him through it.

“I hope I never need cancer treatment again,” he says. “But if I ever do, I would return to New England Cancer Specialists without hesitation. I’m deeply thankful for every member of the team and the difference they made in my life.”
