Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
This service will become available on May 3rd, 2025
What is SBRT?
Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is a highly precise, high-dose radiation therapy that delivers concentrated radiation to a tumor in just 1–5 treatments, compared to several weeks of conventional radiation therapy. SBRT uses advanced imaging to pinpoint tumors with millimeter accuracy.
What Conditions Does SBRT Treat?
SBRT is especially effective for treating small, well-defined tumors, including:
- Lung Cancer (early-stage or metastases)
- Prostate Cancer (in appropriately selected patients)
- Liver Tumors (including metastases)
- Kidney Cancer
- Spinal Tumors
- Bone metastases
Common Questions About SBRT
What is the treatment process like?
- A detailed CT scan is performed for treatment planning
- This scan is often fused to other diagnostic scans including PET scans or MRIs
- A precise radiation plan is created
- Patients typically receive 1 to five sessions on an every other day basis, spaced over 1-2 weeks
- Each session lasts 30 – 45 minutes
What are the possible side effects?
Because SBRT delivers high doses of radiation over fewer sessions, side effects are typically limited but may include:
- Fatigue
- Mild skin irritation
- Localized pain or swelling near the treated area
How long is the healing process?
Patients often resume normal activities quickly, with minimal downtime. Tumor response is monitored over weeks to months using imaging.
