Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
This service will become available on May 3rd, 2025
What is SRS?
Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) is a non-invasive, high-dose radiation treatment used primarily for tumors in the brain and spine. Despite the name, SRS is not surgery—it is an advanced radiation technique that delivers pinpoint radiation in a single session or a few sessions.
What Conditions Does SRS Treat?
SRS is particularly effective for:
- Brain Tumors (Primary and Metastatic)
- Spinal Tumors
- Acoustic Neuromas
- Pituitary Adenomas
- Meningiomas
Common Questions About SRS
What is the treatment process like?
- A detailed CT scan is performed for treatment planning
- This scan is then fused to diagnosed MRI scans to map the tumor location in order for a precise radiation plan to be created.
- Patients typically will receive 1-5 sessions of treatment, each lasting 30 – 45 minutes
- Patients wear a plastic mesh mask during the CT scan and during their SRS treatments, in order to ensure precise treatment delivery. Medication can be prescribed, if necessary, to help with claustrophobia or anxiety related to the mask.
What are the possible side effects?
Because SRS is so precise, it limits radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue, reducing side effects. Some patients experience:
- Mild headache or dizziness
- Temporary fatigue
- Localized swelling near the treatment area
How long is the healing process?
- Most patients can return home the same day and resume normal activities quickly.
- Tumor response is gradual, and follow-up imaging monitors progress over weeks to months.
